NSN Webinar Series: Citizen Science and the Night Sky

Celebrate Citizen Science Month (April 2021) by joining Dave Eicher, Editor-in-Chief of Astronomy Magazine, as he moderates a Q&A with the leaders of the Aurorasaurus, Spiral Graph, and Smartphone Astrophotography citizen science projects.

Discover all three SciStarter projects at https://SciStarter.org/AstronomyMag

Aurorasaurus with Dr. Liz MacDonald

Dr. Liz MacDonald works for NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. She leads the Aurorasaurus citizen science project, which uses citizen science and social media to predict the Northern and Southern Lights. In 2018 MacDonald announced the discovery of a new aurora called STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement). You can report on whether or not you can see the aurora at aurorasaurus.org

Spiral Graph with Patrick Treuthardt, Ph.D.

Patrick Treuthardt, Ph. D., is an astrophysicist whose research is focused on the morphology and dynamics of disk galaxies, and also takes part in public outreach activities that increase access to astronomy and science in general, one of these projects being the Spiral Graph program! You can help scientists measure the curvature of spiral arms in galaxies by participating in the Spiral Graph program at zooniverse.org/projects/astro-lab-ncmns/spiral-graph

Smarthphone Astrophotography with Dr. Sten Odenwald

Dr. Sten Odenwald is an astronomer at the NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center, and the Director of STEM Resource Development at the National Institute of Aerospace. He is an active science popularizer and book author, and participates in many NASA programs in space science and math education, and one of his most recent projects is the Smartphone Astrophotography program, which encourages individuals to take photos of the Moon, planets, and star clusters through their telescope with their smartphone- and help measure light pollution while doing so. Get your phone charged up and find out how to join the Smartphone Astrophotography project at anecdata.org/projects/view/663
