World Migratory Bird Day: June 4

I have volunteered our club to have a table at Potter Park Zoo for the World Migratory Bird Day. The Focus of this year's event is Light Pollution and its effect on migrating birds. Our group is well suited to talk about how bad light pollution is, and what we can do to fix it. We will have some light pollution flyers and can talk to people about shutting off outdoor lights.

I am also thinking about bringing a solar telescope for visitors to take a look at the sun while visiting the Zoo. The ZOO is providing a table and a couple of chairs for our group.

Please let me know if you are interested in coming out for an hour or two and helping me at the booth and chatting with the possibly 900 guests visiting the ZOO! I have a bunch of handouts from the International Dark Sky Association. We can tell people to shut off their lights at night and try to enjoy the sky more.

What: World Migratory Bird Day

When: June 4, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Where: Potter Park Zoo

"Welcome spring! World Migratory Bird Day celebrates the seasonal migration of millions of birds from their southern wintering grounds back to North America! Fun, family-friendly interactive stations throughout the zoo will share the importance of migratory birds."

It was a great Event. I was told the zoo had about 1,700 visitors!! I had the solar telescope set up for about half the day, clouds rolled in so the views were hit or miss for the afternoon. I passed out quite a few sky calendars and Light Pollution fact sheets.
